DIRECTOR’S REPORT:

                       Programs:
Adult Programs: Denise reported on the Adult Program numbers for the final session of  classes.  A couple of new classes began this spring ~ Fit for Summer (9 participants) began April 26th and Outdoor Boot Camp began May 3rd  (12 participants).  New sessions of KOGA (6 participants), 3CPYo (13 participants) and Yoga for Every “Body” (6 participants) began at the end of April. The men’s basketball drop-in program draws 18-20 men each Thursday evening, and the women’s volleyball drop-in program attracts approximately 14 women each Thursday evening.  Hatha Yoga on Tuesday and Thursday mornings has 24 participants combined for their final session.  We are also offering two 3-hour Yoga “retreats” in June and currently have 15 enrolled. The Going Bananas card class has 4 participants for this Thursday evening.
Denise commented on the great participation for the adult classes and that the teachers are all certified and do a tremendous job.  Lisa asked if we will be doing another Kettlebell class in September.  Denise said she hopes to run the class again and that all the feedback she received about the class had been very positive.
Before/After School Programs
We currently have 219 children enrolled in the Before/After School Programs being held in the three elementary schools:
Davis Hill – 51 in the morning and 37 in the afternoon
Mayo -  26 in the morning and 37 in the afternoon
Dawson – 39 in the morning and 29 in the afternoon
The numbers have stayed pretty consistent this year and Denise is pleased with the way the program runs.  Lisa asked if the children participate every day in the program and Denise said parents must pay the weekly rate to reserve the spot (we do not do a “drop in” program) but sometimes the children do not attend every day of the week because they have other activities to attend.

        Summer:
Recreation pass sales started Friday, April 1st.  Non-resident passes sold out within two weeks. Residents have been setting up household accounts using the new on-line registration program and some have been purchasing their passes on-line with credit cards.  Residents who have come to the office to purchase their passes have been encouraged to set up an on-line account in anticipation of registering for pool activities on Saturday, May 14th.  Registration begins at 9 a.m. either on-line or in person at the Senior Center. Registration for non-residents begins Sunday, May 15th at 9 a.m. on-line only.  MyRec.com team will be available on Saturday if there are any computer issues that they would need to address.  Everyone must have pool passes purchased before they can register for activities.  The All Day Program registration is completed for the families who currently attend the Before and After School programs.
The pool will open weekends only beginning June 4th from noon –4:45 p.m. It will open for the season on Wednesday, June 22 at 1:00 p.m. Session 1 will begin June 27th
at 9:00 a.m.
All summer staff have been hired.  Carmelo asked about the volunteer helpers at the pool and Denise said they need to apply for Counselor-in-Training spots on-line as of Saturday, May 14th and they must have a recreation pass to do so.

Miscellaneous:
Sue Serewicz has resigned from the Recreation Committee effective April 11, 2011. Denise complimented and thanked Sue for all her hard work on the committee.  We have appreciated her time and energy and she’ll certainly be missed. Sue has volunteered to help out with Santa’s arrival and summer registration.
The Skateboard Park Committee met prior to the Recreation Committee Meeting this evening. Denise reported that the committee is a bit frustrated that the project has been moved out of fiscal year 2012, but they want to continue to explore fund raising ideas.  They want to look at the designs and hold a 3rd public hearing.  They may consider building the park in phases to generate enthusiasm.  They want it to be a challenging park to skate.
Denise released the fields on April 8th.  This has been a difficult winter and spring, so she solicited assistance from the leagues to help in preparing the fields.
Carmelo asked about the details of the Boot Camp.  Denise said it’s set up like circuit training ~ there are various activities, i.e. weights, bands, ladders, etc. It’s a one hour class, two times a week.
Erin asked if we needed help at registration. Denise said the Before and After school staff and lifeguards will be there to man the tables. She would let Erin know if we needed more help.
Carmelo asked if we offer advanced courses for lifeguard certification   and Denise said no, local colleges usually offer that course.
Have a safe and enjoyable summer!

The meeting was adjourned at 7:55 p.m.

The next Recreation Committee meeting will be held on September 13, 2011 @ 7:00 p.m. at the Starbard Building.

Update: NO meeting held September 13, 2011 ~ lack of quorum. Meeting held October 11, 2011.
